About Ashley

Ashley Banks is a disabled U.S. Army veteran, human resources leader with 16 years of expertise, author, motivational speaker, entrepreneur, and creator whose work is rooted in her signature frameworks, Become Before™ and The One Move Rule™.

During 11 years of service in the U.S. Army, Ashley built her career in human resources, starting as a Human Resources Specialist and later becoming a Human Resources Warrant Officer, ultimately rising to Chief Warrant Officer Two. She completed two tours in South Korea, deployed to Qatar, and served as a Drill Sergeant. During her first tour in South Korea, Ashley helped onboard and integrate more than 25,000 soldiers and their family members into the Republic of Korea. Later, as a Drill Sergeant in Basic Combat Training, she had the privilege of helping transform approximately 4,300 civilians into soldiers—an experience that gave her a front-row seat to what people can become when challenged beyond what they thought possible. While serving on the demanding trail as a Drill Sergeant—often working 60 or more hours each week—Ashley earned her Master of Arts in Human Resources Management. As a Human Resources Warrant Officer, Ashley directed HR operations supporting more than 2,500 personnel and advised senior leaders on workforce planning, performance management, policy compliance, employee relations, and organizational change.

Her military career reflected leadership, discipline, and a commitment to excellence. Ashley graduated as the Honor Graduate of the Human Resources Specialist Advanced Individual Training and Basic Leader Course. She was also recognized as NCO of the Month, NCO of the Quarter and Drill Sergeant of the Month. After becoming a Warrant Officer, Ashley graduated as the Distinguished Honor Graduate of the Human Resources Technician Warrant Officer Basic Course and received the Benjamin Harrison Medal. Her human resources leadership continued beyond military service. As a Human Resources Business Partner for a Fortune 500 company, Ashley partnered with operations leadership to develop and execute people strategies supporting more than 800 employees, driving workforce planning, leadership development, and management coaching aligned with business objectives. She later served as an Ethics Investigations Support Branch Chief for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), directing ethics compliance for more than 80,000 IRS employees and partnering with leaders on investigations, employee relations, management inquiries, policy compliance, and resolving complex workplace issues without litigation. Together, these experiences represent 16 years of human resources expertise spanning military, federal government, and a Fortune 500 environment—from developing people and advising senior leaders to managing workforce strategy, investigations, employee relations, organizational change, and ethics compliance.

But Ashley's story isn't defined only by titles, degrees, awards, or accomplishments. Behind them is a woman who has had to reinvent herself, too. She fought her way through depression that nearly cost her life, anxiety, family rejection, unhealthy relationships, enduring harassment, workplace bullying, military transition, loneliness, and the disorienting identity shift that can happen when the life you worked hard to build no longer feels like the life you want. She is also a single mother raising a son with autism and a fierce advocate for his educational rights while navigating the public education system. Four years after leaving the Army, as she approached her 40th birthday, Ashley faced a difficult realization: no one was coming to hand her the life she dreamed of. She would have to build it herself. That realization became the foundation of her signature frameworks, Become Before™ and The One Move Rule™.

Become Before™ is the practice of becoming the person your next chapter requires before the external proof arrives. The One Move Rule™ turns that identity into action: make one intentional move in the direction of the life you want—and then another. For Ashley, that philosophy isn't theory. She is living it in real time. When depression made motivation difficult, Ashley discovered diamond art. Placing rhinestones one at a time gave her something she desperately needed: calm, focus, and the satisfaction of watching progress take shape in front of her. Eventually, she realized the process reflected the same philosophy she was learning to apply to her life. One rhinestone may not look significant on its own. Neither does one workout, one conversation, one idea, one boundary, one decision to try again or deciding to stay for another day and not succumb to depression and loneliness. But one intentional move followed by another can eventually create an entirely different picture.

Today, that experience has evolved into Ashley Banks, a growing media and lifestyle brand spanning motivational speaking, personal development, publishing, content, entrepreneurship, and luxury do-it-yourself diamond art kits designed to turn creativity into an elevated experience and décor made to last. Ashley is also the author of A Young Black King Can Be Anything. She holds an Associate of Arts in General Studies, a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a minor in Sociology, and a Master of Arts in Human Resources Management.

Ashley isn't speaking about reinvention from the other side of a perfectly finished story. She's living it in real time. Her work brings together 16 years of human resources expertise, more than a decade of military leadership, motherhood, mental health, entrepreneurship, and her own ongoing reinvention to explore what it takes to lead, change, rebuild, and become. Through her speaking, writing, products, and platforms, Ashley challenges people to stop waiting until they feel completely ready, qualified, supported, or certain before beginning. We aren't all given the same starting point, opportunities, resources, relationships, support systems, or obstacles. But wherever you are today, you can decide who you are becoming and make your next move.

Become Before™. The One Move Rule™.
